Lighting and Technical Director

Paul had the opportunity to work with several regional performing arts organizations as a lighting and technical director.

Among the organizations he worked with:

• SafeGuard Lighting Systems, Chester, Pennsylvania — lighting design, from the late 1990s.
• The Southern New Jersey Academy of the Performing Arts — music and technical director, from 1995.
• Gloucester County Institute of Technology — lighting and sound director of the dance program.

Paul worked for SafeGuard Lighting Systems in Chester, and the work put him in the city years before he opened the café there.

The lighting work was not a sideline he kept quiet about — it paid for the André Café for years. A 2005 Philadelphia Inquirer profile noted that he supported the café “with a day job as a lighting designer.”
